The Holliwood® is resting safely on display in Chicago,  sealed in its special bullet-proof high tech display case until the armoured car arrives in February to return it to Minneapolis for the next battle.

Anything can be a trophy. We found a shiny broken waffle iron in the basement of the New Riverside Cafe during the second battle and decided it looked trophy-like enough, since we didn't really have anything for a prize.
It got tossed out, though, and due to popular demand (and the fact that we actually did have a second and third Battle) Eddie Jeff Cahill found the coveted Holliwood® Waffle Iron in HIS basement - and it's been the trophy ever since.
Update: A recently unearthed newsletter sent out after the '99 battle seems to have been the template for the initial engravings after some corrections were sent in. Alas, some of us were negligent sending them in, so the waffle Iron forever states that the 1979 Battle was in 1980 and so on...
Here's the correspondence between Arlo from the
Hump Night Thumpers
(blue text) and Battle Committee members (green text) about the engraving on the
Coveted~yet Mysterious Holliwood
® Waffle Iron.

Before I take this awesome waffle iron out to have "The Hump Night Thumpers" engraved onto it, I wanted to find out: what are the initials like "C" or "V" after some of the band names?

AH: Not posessing said appliance since the 80s, I have no memory of what these symbols mean. Anyone?

PA: I was noticing that last Sunday and I think it might have something to do with the venue - that's a guess.

That would make sense -- I found an article talking about the history of past events at the Palmer bar, the American Legion, and the Riverside Cafe, and that corresponds to initials "P", "L", and "R" on the waffler. Does  anybody know what "St", "V", and "5C" would stand for? (You can tell I'm not from Minneapolis.)

AH: St is probably St Anthony East; V would be the Viking Bar, and 5C would be the 5 Corners...T if its there would be the Triangle Bar.

All right, mystery solved!

AH: Acually, at some point if - you have the time - could you send me a list of  what's engraved? It would be nice to have a list. I tried taking a photo of it a few years back, but the engraving didn't really show up that well.

Sure, I can do that...

Thanks to all, by the way, for organizing this great event!

AH: I ran across these notes a while back, maybe you could cross check what I have here and fill in the blanks. (You know...in your "spare time") It would be nice to post the whole shebang on the battle website.

Sure, no problem. I will mark in red any corrections or additions:

The first few years in your listing were a year early. Maybe this is because the event shifted from just before the new year to just after? For example, your first regular event was dated 1979 but the waffle iron shows 1980 for the same event. I shifted them a year later to match what’s on the iron.

The numbering of years didn’t quite line up, either. It looks like there was no event in 1990, since there were events in Feb. 1991 and again in Dec. 1991. One other year where no winner or location is listed is 1992. But if we skip those two years, this year would have been the 27th annual event. There were locations but not winners listed for 1984 and 1986; if we assume there were no events in those years, this year would have been the 25th. I don’t know if that’s right, but it’s a plausible theory.

If this is too confusing and you’d like me to send you exactly what’s on the waffle iron, let me know!

Cheers,
-Arlo

The waffle iron remains as the best (though it may be flawed) record of what went on, especially in those early years. Beyond the out-of-kilter dates mentioned above (which were verified from surviving flyers). Some of the band names can be kind of slippery. The Golden Calf Jug Army, for instance, started out during the second battle as the Sorry Muthas, but then changed their name to "Little Village" about halfway thru the event, eventually settling on "Golden Calf" when they returned the next year. (The only reason anyone can remember this is that a tape from that year survives.Perhaps the last name change happened after the tape ran out).  Same thing in '95,  where in the  Fritz Richmond article
Bob Stelnicki's winning band is called the Neuroleptic Maniacs, but the iron says Great Bobo. Looking over the surviving posters may uncover venue errors as well...
Such is the Great and Mysterious Power of the Holliwood® Waffle Iron, which also still makes excellent waffles.
